Build a Better Barrier+

BarrierHydrationManuka honey

Welcome back to Office Hours.

I’m Dr. Adam Geyer, a board-certified dermatologist practicing in Manhattan and AUNU’s Chief of Dermatology.

In previous videos, we talked about what makes skin sensitive — and much of that comes down to the skin barrier, your skin’s natural defense system.

Today, we’re focusing on that invisible shield. Your skin barrier is designed to keep the good things — like moisture — in, and the bad things — like irritants and allergens — out. Protecting and restoring the skin barrier is essential for overall skin health and is a central driver of AUNU’s Mānuka Effect™.

When the barrier is weakened by over-exfoliation, stress, pollution, or harsh products, it becomes more permeable. That means water escapes more easily, leading to dryness — and irritants penetrate more easily, leading to reactivity. Skin can even overproduce sebum to compensate, resulting in clogged pores and breakouts — at any age, even if you’ve never struggled with acne before.

AUNU’s system of naturally active, clinically tested products is powered by the four-in-one benefits of our proprietary Comvita MediHoney® medical-grade Mānuka honey. It supports:

  • Barrier repair

  • Increased hydration

  • Reduced inflammation and irritation

  • Antioxidant protection to help defend against premature aging

And here’s the good news: if you treat your skin like a living ecosystem — one that responds to consistent, healthy habits — it will begin to feel smoother, more hydrated, and more resilient in the short term, and appear clearer, stronger, and more radiant over time.

Let this be your reminder: treat your skin kindly. Healthy skin starts with a healthy barrier.

How to Reset a Compromised Skin Barrier

1. Stop the stripping.

Pause harsh cleansers, exfoliating acids, and retinoids or retinols. When your barrier is compromised, one of the most important things you can do is let your skin rest and reset.

2. Cleanse gently.

Swap in a pH-balanced cleanser that respects your barrier — something cushioning and non-stripping. Our Mānuka-based gel-to-foam cleanser removes dirt, oil, and sunscreen without disrupting the essential lipids your barrier needs to stay intact.

3. Rehydrate with humectants.

To restore lost water, use humectants that draw moisture into the skin. The 20% MediHoney® in our Cellular Renewing Essence acts like a magnet, attracting hydration into the outer layer of the skin.

4. Replenish lipids.

Your barrier is built from lipids — including ceramides and fatty acids. Our nourishing Mānuka cream helps replenish these components to rebuild and strengthen the barrier’s protective structure.

5. Seal in moisture.

After hydrating and replenishing, lock everything in with a rich barrier balm like our Mānuka Nourishing Salve. It acts as a gentle occlusive to protect against environmental stressors — and unlike many occlusives, Mānuka honey is non-comedogenic.

6. Calm inflammation.

Break the cycle of irritation with soothing, antioxidant-rich ingredients. Our proprietary medical-grade Mānuka honey helps reduce redness, sensitivity, and inflammation.

7. Support your microbiome.

Healthy skin depends on balanced bacteria. Mānuka honey acts as a selective antimicrobial — targeting harmful bacteria, including acne-causing microbes, while preserving beneficial bacteria essential for barrier resilience.

8. Protect your progress.

Once your barrier is repaired, defend it. UV exposure, pollution, and environmental stressors are major contributors to barrier breakdown. Daily sunscreen is essential — regardless of the weather. Think of SPF as the final layer of your protective shield.

When you consistently support your barrier, your skin becomes stronger, calmer, and more resilient over time.

That’s the power of barrier-first skincare.
